Note, the Jorgensen Eagle did NOT have Union 76 on it at Indy, nor did it have blue wheels as far as I can tell.
When I saw this car in person, I made a mental note that Tamiya French Blue is a good match for this car.

In late 1971 as the 72 Prototype was being finished , R/C racing was in its infancy, because my Dad was working on the the 72 and Running his Shop Santa Ana Raceways he asked Dan if he could use the 1/10th scale wind tunnel model to have Jim Russell (Russkit) make some Lexan R/C Car bodies off of it, Dan agreed. Philipe DeLespinay (PDL) had drawn up some Liveries and submitted them to Dan but he was unsure because it was a color change and a drawing is not the same as the real thing. Actual copy of drawing! PDL was a slot car racer and had been a friend of my parents for years at the shop, My Mom was a commercial artist, calligrapher, and spent hours daily airbrushing clear bodies for everybody in the hobby, all the best used bodies she painted, so PDL brought this drawing to her and asked her to clean the design up. letter it and make it presentable for Dan, using one of the 1/10th scale bodies. She did and Dan Loved it Thus the Livery used by AAR was designed by PDL and executed by my Mom. Just in case you are thinking bullshit, this story was confirmed by Mr.AAR know it all on that other board with Dan and PDL , who is a friend of the family confirmed it also.. Note the changes she did , no claws, more stripes on the nose , cleaned up the lettering, #6 not 8..etc. The livery was used by AAR until the end of 1976 although the car was changed to light blue. The R/C car was on the cover of R.O.A.R newsletter in early 1972, I had the copy until I recently gave it to George Siposs the owner of Associated R/C products... a very important story about the 72 car coming later.. I have a bunch albums in my Fotki Albums, Eagles Galore, Gurney, Eagle Restoration, 78 Eagle and few others containing about 1300 pics all of Eagles and other cars Dan Gurney drove. You can access them at public.fotki.com/pmodwrks/ They are all web photos and I ask that you do not re-post them on any other site, they are for Historical reference and for use in Model car building. I went through a problem recently that I would rather not repeat. Please feel free to use them for your personal reference. I also have many pics of the Harvey Aluminum car Dan also drove at Indy included... Enjoy!!! Chris

In about Oct. of 1971 the prototype as seen in this pic was loaded up on a transporter and Dan, Booby U. , Wayne, John and hand full of people who proudly assembled this new car inc my Dad headed out to Ontario Motor Speedway to shake it down and do some laps. Bobby took the car out warmed it up, Dan gave him the signal to let her rip... Two laps later Bobby brought the car in shaking his head, "The car wont go over 125mph, something is wrong, I almost lost it in the corners!" Bummed out the crew loaded the car up and hauled it back to Santa Ana ... There Wayne couldnt believe it so he told them tear it completely apart and lay the entire car out on the floor.. Standing back looking at the pieces, nobody said a word and then my Dad saw it, "Wayne, the front Torsion Bars are on the wrong sides, no wonder it was scrubbing speed and couldnt corner".. the problem was fixed and the next day they hauled the car back to Ontario. The car was warmed up and Bobby turned to my Dad and said, "You Fixed it, You take it out!" So my Dad climbed in and took it out for 7 or 8 laps and then came into the pits, as He climbed out Dan and Bobby were standing there with smiles on their faces, My Dad told them " Whats the deal? Although the car turned and was smooth I dont think I got it up above 130mph." with a big smile Dan and Bobby both told him "John You just ran 202mph to 225mph!!!!" Bobby jumped in and the rest is history... So Mr AAR from the other board didnt believe this story and on a visit to AAR asked Dan about it. Dan smiled and told him "yes, Thats exactly what happened, we were going to scrap that car til John (Hale) found that simple mistake!"...... Chris

Mike, thanks for the pics and the link and Chris, great story. Dan was my idol growing up and got to meet him in person once in 74 or 5 when he was doing a public appearance with his new F5000 Eagle and EFR at a local AyrWay store in Indy. got a pic of him posing next to my Mazda RX2 with Dan Gurney alloy wheels!

anyone have in the process a 66-67 Eagle? THAT, IMO, was one of the most beautiful open wheel cars ever.
