Built this about 10 years ago. Opted for the Rex Mays #5 version which sat on pole in 1948 and was in the middle of the front row in '49 for which turned out to be the famous Californian's last 500. Made the cheesey diorama from balsa wood, chicken wire and doll house brick siding. -Rick

Great job! Unfortunately it is not historically correct. The car that Rex Mays put on the pole in 1948 was the Bowes Sealfast Spl. No. 5. The two Novis in 1948 were numbered 12 and 54. No. 12 was assigned to Cliff Bergere but on the day before qualifications began he spun the car and crunched the tail against the wall. Berger quit the team and the car was then assigned to Ralph Hepburn. Hepburn was killed in the car two days later. The No. 54 car was assigned to Chet Miller but he was uncomfortable in and it was then assigned to Duke Nalon wo drove it to 3rd place. The Wrecked Hepburn car was rebuilt and assigned to Rex Mays for the 1949 race. It was painted grey with a red No. 5 for that race.

This is a really nice build. I started one of these but put it aside half finished. I was also doing the Rex Mays car. The diorama is anything but cheesy.
