I've finally completed my build of Kyle Petty's car as it looked on "One Hot Night" in the 1992 running of The Winston. Well, at least before it got a few scrapes and tire marks banging fenders with Davey Allison coming to the finish!
1/24 scale Monogram kit with tons of modifications to the body, using Powerslide decals, plus a couple of kit decals for the right side of the dashboard.
MCW #2031 Neon Green and Tamiya TS-14 Black
Tamiya TS-13 Clear
A fun little comparison between my build and the real car, you can certainly see how even with my ton of modifications I did to the body, it's still not quite right.
For those interested in the giant list of all the stuff I had to do to make this car look more like its real life counterpart...
-Reshaped front and rear window openings to allow installation from the outside.
-Scratch built new front windshield including roll bars and braces, new quarter windows, and NACA ducts. I used the kit rear window but modified it to fit.
-Sanded the area around the headlights up to the hood to make it smoother and rounder.
-Completely reshaped nose and air dam.
-Extended front fenders to make the front wheel openings smaller.
-Sanded the wheel openings to make the plastic less thick so it looks more like sheet metal.
-Scratch built new rear spoiler, fuel filler, vent tube, exhaust, and roof antenna.
-Removed the right side skirt since Petty did not have one on the car in the Winston.
-Removed roll bars from behind the A pillar since Petty did not run those on his car in this race.
-Added rollbar padding, wiring, and steering wheel coiled cable to the cockpit area.
-Sanded the window net to look flatter.
-Scratch built seat belts.
-Scratch built cooling hoses for left quarter window.
-Added valve stems to wheels.
-Cut spindles off and glued wheels directly on to set the ride height.
