I am super pleased to have found this forum! I have decided to get back into modelling after a 40-year break. I currently have the AMT K-Mart Lola and the AMT Pennzoil PC-17 on my shelf with Danny Sullivan's Miller High Life PC-17 on the way. I'm thinking that I'll start with the Lola, and do the Pennzoil kit last as Rick Mears was my favourite driver of that era. I want them all to be good, but Rick's especially. I attended the first five Molson Indys in Toronto and am a big Indycar fan. I may pick up a few more kits as I'd like to do "Mr. Consistency's" Budweiser car too – I always liked Rahal. While I was a modelling fan as a teen, I am starting from ground-zero here boys and am making my shopping list of equipment and supplies. I'm all-in and excited to get started. Sadly, my biggest obstacle is free time.

Before I went to surgery I wanted to post these pictures on how the engine fit under the cowling, but with the surgery and prep on my mind I completely forgot! So, I am posting them now so you can see the fit.

After watching the 1987 Pocono 500 a number of times and capturing some video as stills, I realized that I didn’t have the rear cowling on the Mears car quite right. First off I noticed that the cowling was actually flat on top mainly after the pop-off valve. There also is a small thin NACA duct just after the pop-off valve on the cowling. The shape of the exhaust hole in the cowling just wasn’t quite right either. So, instead of messing with the car I had started, I began to build a new car for the Mears car! Here are a couple of the pics I captured. I got the body together; I then went to work on the cowling. Cutting off the kick-ups first. I then cut a slot in the rear part of the cowling just after the pop-off valve. I inserted a flat piece of Evergreen .020 plastic strip. I then reshaped the exhaust hole. However, I think the hole might be too big! You can see my discussion on this subject in an earlier post. indycarmodeling.proboards.com/thread/1721/1987-penske-march-engine-coversNow revisiting this post and also seeing the pictures of the race. I am more inclined to think that Mear's car had a hybrid cowling from the Penske PC-16. Jim

I almost forgot! The yellow cowling was the one I originally shaved down, but adding the strip in the middle top of the cowling on the primered one really tapers it even more! On further inspection I think I need to move the exhaust hole further aft. Jim

Well I know it's been quite a while since I posted on these cars. Lately I've had some time to get back to work on these cars. It looks somewhat of a miniature production line at the workbench. I am presently working on the engines, transmissions and suspensions. Mainly a lot of painting. Hopefully, I'll be posting some pictures of progress in the near future.

I have been trying to figure out the turbo and exhaust setup for the Rahal car. I believe I have finally worked it out! It was all in the March update from Indycals. Duh! I pulled out the mock up that I used for the Unser car. Using the turbo charger offered in Michael’s update for the March. The turbo fits neatly into the transmission void. The plumbing fits nicely with the provided plenum and waste gate setup. I used the manifolds from the kit fitting them under the plenum onto the engine block. It all seems to fit nicely. Now I just have to deal with the scoop for air provided to the turbo. I have a couple of ideas. Stay tuned to see what I will do……………

I forgot to mention I have two more turbo configurations to figure out! Mears' car most likely will be like Unser's except that Mears' has a Chevrolet engine. Andretti's car will be somewhat like Rahal's car but is again a little bit different. I'll keep you posted.

Now revisiting this post and also seeing the pictures of the race. I am more inclined to think that Mear's car had a hybrid cowling from the Penske PC-16. Jim, not sure if these will help as the post is from early last year but here goes nothing... 1987 Penske PC16 (looks the same on RC or oval) 1987 March 86C Chevy Superspeedway
Indy Michigan, where no kickups block the rear cowling To my eye, the references of Mears in the 1987 86C Chevy on road courses looks like a stock 86C Cosworth engine cover. Jordan

Thanks for the pics Jordan! While I don't believe that the cowling is from the PC-16 on the March. It is definitely a very close relative. I believe that type of cowling was fitted for the Chevy engine. More than likely it is Mr. Penske searching for the Penske advantage! Both cowlings have the flat area on the top of the cowling, from the jack hose port to the rear of the cowling. They also have a long NACA duct on top of the cowling just behind the pop-off valve opening. The turbo-exhaust is at the left rear on both cowlings. I did note that the exhaust exits are different between the two. You are correct on the road course. The Penske Team had a number of 86 Marches for 1987 season, along with the PC-16. The chassis' were switched up among the three drivers through the season and not all March chassis' were run at each race. March Chassis #22 was used by Mears in the 1986 Indy 500, then used by Unser in the 1987 500. Both times Chassis #22 had the Cosworth engine in it. Mears would set an all time closed course record at Michigan in 1986 in chassis #22 running a lap of 233.934mph with a Chevy engine in it! For more on Chassis #22 go to; indycarmodeling.proboards.com/thread/1720/1987-penske-march-86c-chassis For some reason after Indy on the super speedways they took of the rear kick-ups on the March chassis. This is the way the Penske Marches ran at Michigan and Pocono. I really wish I wouldn't have lost my contact at the Penske museum. I have so many more questions to ask! Jordan I don't know if you have any contacts within the Penske team anymore either, but if you do, maybe you can find some answers to these questions? Jim

Hi I’ve been watching this thread since the beginning and have learned a lot from your expertise. Glad to see you are back at it along with the 87 March thread. Thank you! Quick question I see that you are using the March 88 gearbox…is that just for testing the fit?

Hi I’ve been watching this thread since the beginning and have learned a lot from your expertise. Glad to see you are back at it along with the 87 March thread. Thank you! Quick question I see that you are using the March 88 gearbox…is that just for testing the fit? In answer to your question you are correct that the engine block and transmission is just a mock up for test fitting. If you go back to the earlier part of this thread you will find pictures of the correct transmission that was attached to the kit engine.
Here is what the original kit block and transmission look like in yellow. The white transmission is a 85-87 Transmission from Indycals update set.
Here is the prep of removing the kit transmission and clean up of the Indycals update.
The two pieces are now joined together giving it the correct look for the 86/87 March.
