Impressive work and it would fill a hole in my collection too. I'm tempted to follow your lead. The 5 spoked wheels might be a challenge though. Just took a stroll through Google images and that one pic is the only one I see with 5 spoke wheels so kit wheels are good. 5 spokes look really cool though.

Good eye on the wheels. However, that picture is the picture after qualifying for the Indy 500. If you watch the Indy 500 race you will see that Michael Andretti used the standard Lola wheels in the race. Secondly, Michael also used the standard Lola wheels in the Michigan 500 race, which is the car that I am trying to depict here. I will have a picture or two of that car as I go along.

One quick entry before the big race tomorrow! Continuing on I cut out and made the vertical face of the extension from the same Evergreen plastic sheet .020 and attached to the outside of the extension. Next a lot of filling, sanding and filing! Jim

I know it's been a while, but I have been making a little progress here and there. I began filling in the top area of the extensions with putty. There are many types of putty you can use. I am still a member of the old school and used fine Milliput. After much filling, sanding and priming I think I finally captured the look of the 87 March’s body extensions. As you can see the extensions are not flat. The inner part is somewhat concave. As I was looking through my references on this car I found that Michael’s car had a NACA duct on the nose for the Michigan 500 race, much like the Rahal car. I wish I spotted this sooner it is so much easier to cut a NACA duct in the nose before putting the tub halves together. After much cursing, I did manage to cut one in! Jim

Looking Good Jim, I dont mind cutting in NACA ducts but I wiis I could get my hands on one of the Photo Etch NACA duct template sheets that were made by a guy in Germany, sure would make it easier to get both side even and the overall shape correct.. Chris

Well after cutting a NACA duct into the nose of the car, I sat and watched the 1987 Michigan 500 the other day. I was surprised to found out that the promotional qualification picture of Michael's car for the Michigan 500 is different than the car he ran in the 500. I just hate when that happens! Here is the front row picture for the race; You can clearly see that there is a NACA duct on the nose of the car between the the STP and the number. As I watched the race I noticed on one of Michael's pit stops that the car did not have a NACA duct. Here are two snapshots from the race, you can obviously see that there are no NACA ducts! Fortunately I did not paint the car as of this time and I was able to fill in the NACA hole on the nose of the car.
Another lesson learned! Cars can change in a moments notice from practice to qualification, to promotional race picture, to race! Jim
