After I get back from vacation, it'll be time to do some serious decaling work. Until then, I've tried to work on a few other things. Now I need some help on this part, guys... How in the world do I get the chrome mirrors to actually seat into place in the mirror struts? They absolutely do not want to go into place when I've tried dry-fitting them. (On a related note, here's a nice shot of the windscreen and cockpit) Here's a work-in-progress update on my driver model. The helmet still needs a few decals, and the body needs a coat of Dullcote to knock off the glossy shine from the belts. I still also need to add decals to the arms. And I will need to tint the visor and glue it onto the helmet. I got the rear suspension glued into place on the chassis. I didn't bother adding any detail at all to the springs, etc. since you'll never see any of the stuff under the engine cover on this model. Here's a nice 3/4 view where I dry-fitted the cockpit, etc. onto it. With the sidepods. One thing that bothers me is the engine cover's notches for the suspension don't quite line up perfectly with the suspension. It's a minor thing, but still. I finally remembered to take a picture of the rear wing to show where I repaired the chip in the paintwork. I also bothered to throw some paint on the skid block.

Nice model to do, if the decals play up Michael has now done this car.

I've been quite busy since I got back from Vegas! Some stress at work, plus my mother in law is in the hospital with a blood clot in her lung, so I've been working on my model a lot to relax. I did get some Solvaset, which is SO much better than Micro-sol for really getting around tricky spots. Plus I got the new decal sheet from Indycals which is 1000% easier to use than the thick-as-cardboard kit decals. The wheels/tires are almost/maybe done. I gave the sidewall of the tires a couple of coats of Dullcote and it really made them look nice. I still need to put the tiny decals on the outside edges of the rims, if I feel like I can make it look any good. Otherwise on the car itself, I've gotten some SERIOUS decaling work done! One last look at the dismembered driver... Now our driver is finally put together and in the cockpit! Getting the cockpit inserted into the chassis wasn't too bad. Getting the steering wheel into place with the driver's arms in the way, on the other hand... I had to angle the entire cockpit a little bit, get the wheel into place, then slide the cockpit the rest of the way into position.

Excellent return to Indy modeling! Sorry to hear of your personal troubles. One note about Solvaset, it CAN be a miracle cure for many decal situations but it can also be TOO strong for some decals. If in doubt, test an extra decal or two first.

Spot on Brian. That stuff is STRONG. I generally tried to apply the decal without using Solvaset at first, then if it had contours to go around, I'd apply some Solvaset and carefully maneuver it into place. If the decal didn't have to really go around anything, but did need to settle into crevices, I'd let the decal set into place a little before applying a light coat of Solvaset. I ended up having a couple decals that got slightly damaged, but a couple of them were just trouble straight off the decal sheet thanks to being scratched.
By the way, if anybody's curious, I lightly tinted the driver's visor. I dipped it in a mix of Future and black food coloring, let it dry 24 hours, then did a second coat.

The end is definitely in sight now! All that is left is gluing on the front suspension and putting on the wheels. (And I mentioned my mother in law being in the hospital last post. She actually got to go home last Tuesday, and she's still recovering. She's on oxygen until the clot clears up, but she at least got to come over for a cookout this weekend for my wife's birthday!)
