Hello All,
I've been a regular on the F1M website since the Fall of 2012, when I returned to model building after many years away, and figured it was time to get my feet wet here. I recognize a few names from F1M here (Michael at Indycals, Shunter, come to mind), so I don't feel completely strange. I've seen some really nice builds here, and I hope to make a few humble contributions.
In this new world (to me anyway), I tried to make the switch from enamels to acrylics, and after buying many jars of Tamiya acrylics, I decided I couldn't cope and sold the whole bunch. So, I'm stuck with my old standbys, Model Master and Humbrol enamels, Testors and Model Master dull, semi-gloss, and clear lacquers, and of course, Tamiya TS sprays. I've dabbled some in Scale Finishes, as well, and have a few containers of Alclad and Vallejo Model Air.
I've been building mostly F1 cars, mostly Ferrari, mostly 1/43, but some 1/24 and 1/20. I'm about to finish a Tameo (1/43) Ferrari F1 89 and a Hasegawa (1/24) 640, and I'm thinking of doing something completely different for my next project - an AMT or Monogram Indycar.
Having no experience whatsoever with AMT and Monogram Indycar kits, I have some questions, and I hope it's OK to ask them here in my intro'.
I was planning on building one of two AMT kits, for which I already have Indycals, but now I'm considering a Monogram kit, mainly because the A-arms aren't cast to the cowling. But, on the AMT kits, is it do-able to cut the suspension from the cowling, and pin it for installation after the cowling is painted?
One kit under consideration is AMT's Rick Mears' '88 Pennzoil Special PC-17. Would Tamiya TS-16 be a good match? Or TS-47, which might be a little too dark?
Another kit under consideration is Monogram's Quaker State March Porsche. Is Tamiya TS-35 Park Green a good color, or should I decant some TS sprays or use enamels and mix my own?
Finally, I think this one could be trouble, although there isn't so much scary masking as required on the March Porsche - Is there a good TS silver for the Monogram Raynor Lola Judd (sidepods, front wings, rear wing endplates)? The "silver" decals with the kit are actually a screened black on a white background.
OK, thanks in advance, and I look forward to participating here.
Cheers,
Greg
